In Fortsetzung des Mittellandkanals existiert der Elbe-Havel-Kanal als Verbindung der Elbe mit der Havel bei Brandenburg. Er verbindet also den Mittellandkanal, und damit die Industrieregion im Ruhrgebiet, mit den Kanalsystemen Brandenburgs und damit auch Berlin.
Der Elbe-Havel-Kanal startet an der Schleuse Hohenwarthe bei Kilometer 325,6 des Mittellandkanals, die Kilometrierung des MLK wird dabei fortgesetzt. Bei Kilometer 379,0 mündet der Elbe-Havel-Kanal bei Plaue in den Plauer See und damit in die untere Havel. Der größte Teil des 54 km langen Kanals verläuft dabei in Sachsen-Anhalt.
