Stausee am Übergang vom Sauerland zur Soester Börde. Erstreckt sich in Ost-West-Richtung. Der Stausee ist relativ breit und deshalb stärkeren West-, Nord- und Ostwinden ausgesetzt.
Ende der Befahrbarkeit, da die untere Möhne nicht ruderbar ist. Am nördlichen Ende der Staumauer ist ein Anleger für die Möhneseeausflugsschifffahrt, hier also Vorsicht!
